Stefano Angioni, University of Bath
In this talk we would like to share with you some of the initial findings of our Cloud Pilot Project (CPP) at the University of Bath. This project is testing the feasibility of moving entire HPC and research computing workflows into the public cloud, specifically Microsoft Azure. The talk will take place while we are about half way though this journey. Amongst the advantages offered by public cloud are the availability of the latest HPC hardware and the possibility of elastic compute based on user demand. On the other hand, some of the challenges we will be facing are authentication, managing user storage, billing and integrating the cloud platform with our enterprise infrastructure. As part of the project we will be looking at how such a move into cloud will affect Bath’s research ecosystem; covering impacts to TCO models, research grants, application performance, through to end-user experience.
