Adopt a Cloud to change Research Computing at Diamond

Andrew Richards, Chris Reynolds, Diamond Lightsource

Cloud technologies are being investigated and adopted within Diamond to change the way we handle experimental data initially and to enable a new level of service provision to end users. Increasingly Diamond wants to enable its users to generate knowledge in the shortest time possible. Enabling the use of external clouds (commercial or via entities like STFC) enables appropriate computational resources to be created and used as required. Equally, the ability to bring cloud methodologies in-house to develop on-premise analysis platforms for future data acquisition and processing is of interest. To enable Diamond to move beyond the classic provision of compute and storage services in a traditional HPC environment. This talk is to outline the opportunities and challenges that adopting a cloud methodology can bring and to give an overview of the work undertaken to date.
